Kano Constructs 130 new schools through AGILE Project – Commissioner of Education

The Kano State Government said it will construct 130 new Schools in the state through Adolescent Girls Initiative Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) Project.

Dr Gwani Ali Haruna Makoda, the Commissioner of Education, made this known at Kano State Education Sector Joint Steering Committee Meeting holding in Kaduna from Saturday 22nd – Sunday 23rd February, 2025.

Makoda said the construction consists of 75 Junior Secondary School and 55 Senior Secondary Schools across the state. 

The Commissioner added that the state government has introduced digital literacy programmes through AGILE and IDEAS projects.

He lamented how the previous administration in the state abandoned education sub sector with dilapidated infrastructure, overcrowded classrooms and inadequate teachers. 

In his address the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Education Malam Baffa Bashir said the meeting was to review Kano State’s current key education priorities (2025-2026) and align them with strategic objectives. 

The permanent secretary hinted that the meeting will also deliberate on the Kano Recovery Plan 14-points education reform agenda and share insights on the Kano Education Strategic Plan (ESP), Mutual Accountability Framework Curriculum Reform and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) roadmap 2025-20220.

In his remarks, the Executive Chairman of State Universal Basic Education board ((SUBEB) Alhaji Yusuf Kabir on behalf of all parastatals under the ministry of education assured them of their maximum support and cooperation to the commissioner of education. 

The Executive Chairman SUBEB described the deployment of Gwani Makoda to Ministry of Education as a blessing to the state. 

In a goodwill message delivered at the end of the event the Kano State Project Coordinator of AGILE Malam Mujittapha Aminu said AGILE Project is a five-year World Bank intervention being implemented through Federal and Kano state Ministry of Education. 

The Project Coordinator said the three components of AGILE are aligned to education sector plan and Medium Term Sector Strategy (MTSS) plan. 

On his part the member representing Kiru in Kano State House of Assembly Usman Abubakar Tasiu assured of maximum support of the Assembly to education sector in Kano state. 

Prof. Auwalu Halilu, chairman of Kano State Accountability Forum on Education (K-SAFE) said the coalition is supporting the ministry of education and it’s parastatals on schools monitoring and advocacy.

He recalled that as accountability platform they have appealed to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to declare state of emergency on education when he assumed office, and he humbly responded positively.

Highlights of the event include goodwill messages from representatives of Kano State House of Assembly, FCDO PLANE, UNICEF, PLAN International AGILE and IDEAS project.
