In a strategic move to boost the fight against desertification, the Federal Government has relocated the Operational Headquarters of the National Agency for the Great Green Wall (NAGGW) from Abuja to Kano State.

The Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, announced the decision, noting that the relocation is designed to maximize operational efficiency and strengthen the execution of the environmental program across Nigeria’s climate-vulnerable frontline states.

The agency’s new headquarters will be situated at the Afforestation Programme Coordinating Unit (APCU) office in Kano a location central to the Sahel-Sahara regions hardest hit by land degradation.

“The strategic relocation will significantly improve the agency’s effectiveness in implementing the Great Green Wall Programme across Nigeria’s frontline states,” Minister Lawal stated.

The Minister explained that operating from a temporary, rented office in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) created massive logistical challenges, as the vast majority of the agency’s field projects are concentrated in the far north.

By embedding the headquarters within the operational zone, the government aims to achieve tighter project oversight, seamless coordination with local authorities, and faster service delivery.

Initiated by the African Union and spanning over 11 member nations, the Great Green Wall Programme is a massive climate-action initiative designed to combat desertification, restore degraded lands, and mitigate the adverse effects of climate change across the Sahel-Sahara region.

In Nigeria, the initiative spans 11 frontline states of

• Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, and Gombe

• Jigawa, Kano, Katsina, and Kebbi

• Sokoto, Yobe, and Zamfara

The ultimate mandate of the NAGGW is to establish a massive 15-kilometer by 1,500-kilometer Green Wall belt to promote sustainability, boost food security, and alleviate rural poverty.

Since its inception in 2013 and its transition into a full agency in 2015, the government reports that the NAGGW has hit several key milestones,

As Nigeria grapples with intensifying climate threats that directly impact agriculture and northern livelihoods, this relocation marks a shift toward a more aggressive, hands-on approach to environmental defense.
