Its rise from 35th position last year to an impressive 4th place marks one of the most remarkable improvements ever achieved by any state in the country’s climate governance history.

‎This was contained in a statement issued by the governors spokesperson Sunusi Bature Dawakin on Tuesday.

‎‎According to the statement, this outstanding performance is the direct outcome of the visionary leadership of Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, Governor of Kano State.

‎Yusuf has made environmental sustainability and climate resilience a central pillar of his administration’s development agenda.

‎Governor Yusuf’s administration has implemented wide-ranging reforms and initiatives designed to protect the environment, promote renewable energy, and strengthen climate adaptation across the state.

‎These include the Kano State Climate Change Policy, the deployment of renewable energy in public institutions, urban greening and beautification projects under the Urban Renewal Programme, as well as large-scale afforestation and erosion control interventions.

‎Representing Governor Yusuf at the official unveiling of the 2025 ranking in Abuja, the Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Dahiru Hashim, said the recognition underscores the Governor’s steadfast commitment to sustainable development and responsible environmental management.

‎At the event, Samantha Harrison, First Secretary, Climate Diplomacy – British High Commission, Abuja, presented the certificate of recognition to the Kano State Government in acknowledgment of its outstanding progress in climate governance.

‎Governor Yusuf expressed appreciation to the Honourable Minister of Environment, Mallam Balarabe Abbas Lawal, the Federal Ministry of Environment, and the Department of Climate Change for their continuous partnership and leadership in strengthening subnational climate governance.

‎He further commended the Society for Planet and Prosperity (SPP) and the University of Bristol, United Kingdom, for initiating and managing the national climate governance ranking, as well as the UK-FCDO Partnership for Agile Governance and Climate Engagement (PACE) and other development partners for their unwavering support to Kano’s environmental transformation.

‎Governor Yusuf noted that this milestone belongs to the Government and people of Kano State, reaffirming his administration’s resolve to build a cleaner, greener, and more climate-resilient future for all.
