NASENI Empowers 2,000 Kano Households with Clean Energy Solutions

In a major boost for rural electrification and environmental sustainability, the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) has distributed clean energy technologies to over 2,000 households in Kano State.

The distribution, held on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, at the Fabs Event Centre, marks the launch of the agency’s Sustainable Empowerment Programme. Beneficiaries received locally produced solar home systems and clean cookstoves designed to increase energy access in semi-urban and rural communities.

Flagging off the initiative, the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Jumoke Oduwole, characterized the intervention as a practical translation of federal industrial policy into tangible relief for citizens.

“This initiative aligns perfectly with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda,” Oduwole stated. She emphasized that by promoting local production and innovation, NASENI is fostering job creation and inclusive economic growth.

The Minister further highlighted Kano’s role as a West African commercial powerhouse, noting that the deployment of these technologies supports the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) objectives by enhancing the productive capacity of small businesses and households.

Executive Vice Chairman of NASENI, Khalil Suleiman Halilu, explained that the empowerment scheme is a core component of the agency’s Zero Carbon (ZeCo) Project.

The mission aims to drastically reduce Nigeria’s carbon footprint while providing realistic, home-grown energy alternatives.

“These technologies are not just imported solutions; they are locally produced and tailored to Nigerian realities. Our goal is to improve livelihoods while building a cleaner, more resilient economy,” Halilu noted.

The event drew high-level representation from across the federal and state governments. Goodwill messages were delivered by:

Mohammed Dahiru, Chairman, Presidential Implementation Committee on Technology Transfer.

Chris Osa Isokpunwu, Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment.

Patience Okala, National Coordinator of AfCFTA.

Salisu Mustapha, representing the Kano State Head of Service.

This programme represents a milestone in NASENI’s ongoing transition toward becoming a hub for sustainable development and local manufacturing, ensuring that Nigerian innovation directly impacts the quality of life at the grassroots level.
