The Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN), Kano State Council, has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening routine immunization and improving child health outcomes across Kano State.

The assurance was given during a follow-up advocacy visit on October 6, 2026, led by the BOOST Project—implemented by Save the Children International with funding from GSK—alongside the Kano State Community of Practice on Immunization, Budget Tracking, Advocacy and Accountability (KN-CoP).

Discussions focused on member sensitization, improving caregiver-health worker relations, and enhancing professional service delivery at primary healthcare facilities.

The delegation, led by the BOOST Project Policy and Advocacy Officer and the Chairman of KN-CoP, met with MHWUN leadership headed by State Secretary Comrade J. A. Umar.

Addressing key sector challenges, the union highlighted its ongoing advocacy to the Kano State Government for increased deployment of newly recruited health workers to Primary Health Care (PHC) facilities, where staffing shortages remain critical.

The union noted that adequate staffing reduces workload, eases facility overcrowding, and fosters better patient care.

Comrade Umar praised the state government for recently recruiting over 2,000 health workers and investing in facility renovations, while continuing to call for upgraded infrastructure, improved welfare packages, and hazard allowances for health personnel.

The engagement also emphasized healthcare inclusivity. Dahiru Aftahana, a member of KN-CoP, urged health institutions to adopt measures that accommodate persons with disabilities, specifically addressing communication barriers faced by individuals with hearing impairments.

Reiterating MHWUN’s dedication to grassroots healthcare, Comrade Umar emphasized that well-staffed primary health centers relieve pressure on secondary facilities and serve as the essential first line of care for communities.

The BOOST Project team commended MHWUN’s proactive leadership, presented advocacy briefs outlining recommendations for immunization coverage, and secured the union’s partnership in advancing equitable healthcare access across Kano State.
