The Population Services International (PSI) Nigeria has launched the Menstrual Health (MH-NOW) project in Kano State.

This is aim to address the challenges faced by adolescent girls and young women during their menstrual periods.

Speaking during a media engagement session held in Kano, Dr. Abdulhamid Adediran, Senior Program Manager and Team Lead on Menstrual Health at PSI Nigeria, explained that the project aims to promote awareness and provide solutions to menstrual health issues.

“Menstrual health is a crucial aspect of adolescent and young women’s lives, and our goal is to use this project to reach girls aged 10-24 with accurate information and support,” Dr. Abdulhamid said.

“We’re leveraging the influence of the media to educate and empower young women, especially in breaking the myths and stigma surrounding menstruation.”

Dr. Abdulhamid highlighted findings from research showing that three out of ten girls miss school during their menstrual periods.

“This absence places girls at a disadvantage compared to their male counterparts who remain in school,” he noted.

As part of the MH-NOW initiative, PSI has launched a music video titled *“Time of the Month”* featuring actors from Nollywood and Kannywood to amplify advocacy messages.

The video addresses socio-cultural barriers and promotes menstrual hygiene.

Kano is among six states selected for the implementation of the MH-NOW project, which focuses on eradicating period poverty, stigma, and other challenges linked to menstrual health.

Dr. Abdulhamid also commended the media’s role in spreading awareness.

“The media in Kano has been instrumental in disseminating information about menstrual hygiene, with emphasis on reusable pads, proper hygiene, and WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) practices for healthier and sustainable environments,” he said.

He urged media personnel to intensify efforts in reaching adolescent girls and young women with menstrual health information, adding that such efforts are critical in preventing diseases and dispelling myths surrounding menstruation.

“This project is about giving young women the tools and knowledge they need to manage their menstrual health with dignity and confidence,” Dr. Abdulhamid added.
