The Kano Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs has taken a significant step towards enhancing governance and budgetary processes at the local level by organising a 2-day budget sensitisation workshop on the Medium-Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) for 2026-2028.

The workshop, held at The Pyramid By Abokie Hotel Kaduna, brought together 44 local government chairmen and heads of planning departments and other Local Government officials, to equip them with the necessary skills and knowledge for effective budget planning and implementation.

This initiative demonstrates the Kano State Government’s commitment to promoting inclusive governance, transparency, and accountability in local government administration.

By developing a comprehensive MTEF, local governments will be better positioned to drive development and deliver essential services to citizens.

The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Mohammed Tajo Othman, emphasised the significance of this MTEF sensitisation workshop, particularly with the development of a new template.

He highlighted the importance of shaping realistic budgets that address community needs while aligning with state policies and priorities.

The Commissioner encouraged active participation, critical thinking, and insight sharing to ensure people-centred budgets that drive meaningful development outcomes.

Alhaji Mohammed Othman stressed the importance of responsive budgeting that meets community needs and urged participants to seize this opportunity for collaborative problem-solving and active engagement.

He highlighted that effective planning and budgeting are key to local government success and called for collective effort in developing an MTEF that drives transformative change and improves citizens’ lives.

Earlier, in her welcome address, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Hajiya Fatima Adamu Barde, advised participants to be attentive and grasp the concepts being taught during the workshop, noting that budget issues have a direct impact on the public.

She emphasised that a budget is a vital document that serves as a plan of action and guides the conduct of operations for every government worldwide.

Speaking on behalf of the 44 local government chairmen, the Deputy ALGON Kano South and Chairman of Gaya Local Government, Hon. Mahmoud Tajo Gaya expressed delight with the workshop, describing it as timely and noting that it will guide their 2026 appropriation bill.

Acknowledging that most of the local government officials, despite being well-versed in public administration, may not be familiar with budget formulation and implementation.

Hon. Mahmoud Tajo Gaya emphasised their zealous commitment to driving meaningful development in their respective communities.
