Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has announced his administration’s plan to procure sets of CNG-powered buses to alleviate transportation challenges faced by citizens following the removal of the fuel subsidy.

This was disclosed during the commissioning of 10 CNG buses procured by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Kano State Branch, at their office along Katsina Road.

In a statement issued by the Governor’s spokesperson, Malam Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, Governor Yusuf revealed that 30 of the 80 luxurious buses purchased but abandoned by the previous administration would be converted to CNG for public use.

The remaining 50 buses would be added to the fleet currently used to transport students to and from school daily.

The governor commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for providing these easily maintained vehicles to the 36 states, aimed at reducing the challenges caused by the removal of the fuel subsidy.

He also praised the NLC for selecting Kano State as the launchpad for the buses and assured continued collaboration with the union to foster mutual understanding and support.

Governor Yusuf further announced plans to establish a fully equipped CNG Service Centre to ensure proper maintenance of the vehicles. Additionally, he pledged to provide land for the construction of a Nigeria Labour Congress Institute in Kano, promising to lay the foundation stone soon and encouraging contributions toward its development.

NLC President Joe Ajaero, who attended the event, commended the governor for his commitment for implementing the N71,000 minimum wage.

He appealed to other governors to emulate Kano’s labour-friendly approach and warned of consequences for any government failing to implement the approved wage.

The Kano State NLC Chairman, Kabiru Inuwa, also appealed for the construction of the NLC Institute at their premises.

During a courtesy visit to the governor, Yusuf emphasized the shared vision between his administration and labor unions to prioritize citizens’ welfare.

He described the NLC as a critical institution focused on improving workers’ well-being and reiterated his administration’s determination to execute people-oriented projects without political bias.

In a related development, the governor hosted National and State NLC executives for a dinner at the Government House, where his representative, Commissioner of Information Malam Baba Halilu Dantiye, expressed gratitude to the labor leaders for attending the reception.
