The Kano State Government has revamped the oversight and coordination of its 2026 Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention (SMC) programme to ensure full transparency, accountability, and seamless execution across all 44 Local Government Areas.

The intervention follows the constitution of a high-level investigative committee by the Honourable Commissioner for Health on Wednesday, August 5, 2026. Chaired by the Director General of the State Agency for the Control of AIDS (SACA), Dr. Usman Bashir, the committee was tasked with auditing the preparation, distribution, and overall implementation processes of this year’s SMC exercise.

To address administrative gaps and reinforce monitoring, the committee engaged Malaria Elimination Programme Officers (MEPOs) across all 44 LGAs to reconcile program data. In addition, key restructuring decisions were made:

Abdullahi Yusuf Koki has been appointed as Acting Programme Manager, Bashir Maikano as Acting State M&E Officer, and Surayya Aminu as Acting State Assistant M&E Officer.

Three additional zonal M&E personnel from the State Primary Health Care Management Board have been deployed to bolster ground verification and coordination.

With verification processes near completion, the statewide 2026 SMC exercise is officially scheduled to commence on Wednesday, August 12, 2026.

Meanwhile, the investigative committee will continue working within its Terms of Reference. It is expected to submit detailed findings and recommendations, including administrative, corrective, or disciplinary measures against any individuals found culpable of misconduct.
