Kano Launches Round 2 of Free Tetanus Vaccination for Women Aged 15–49

The Kano State Government has officially kicked off Phase 2 of its Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus Elimination (MNTE) campaign, targeting women across 18 high-risk local government areas.

The target Audience are Women of reproductive age (15 to 49 years), including those who received their first dose in May.

The goal is to reach 1,191 previously unreached settlements and hard-to-reach communities to eliminate maternal and newborn tetanus.

As the First Phase was conducted on May 2026 phase which achieved a 96.5% coverage rate, vaccinating over 1.33 million women.

Speaking at the launch at the Kano Emergency Operations Centre (EOC), the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, emphasized that tetanus remains a deadly yet entirely preventable disease.

“Maternal and neonatal tetanus is deadly, but it is entirely preventable. By protecting a woman of reproductive age, we also give her newborn a safer start to life.” Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf said”,

He urged all eligible women even those currently feeling healthy to visit vaccination sites.

Those who took the first dose in May are strongly advised to complete their second dose for long-term immunity.

While Phase 1 successfully vaccinated 1,339,871 women out of the targeted 1,388,396, approximately 1,191 settlements were missed due to geographic and logistical challenges.

Round 2 specifically targets these gaps:

Focus: Deep-rural, underserved, and hard-to-reach communities in the 18 priority LGAs.

Readiness: Vaccines, logistics, supervisors, and community mobilizers have been fully deployed.

Dr. Yusuf appealed to husbands, parents, traditional and religious rulers, local government authorities, civil society groups, and the media to actively counter misinformation and encourage women to get vaccinated.

He reaffirmed the commitment of the Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf administration to strengthening primary healthcare, maternal health, and child survival, while thanking key development partners including NPHCDA, UNICEF, WHO, Rotary, AFENET, CORE Group, Solina, and the Gates Foundation.
