In a move widely commended by stakeholders and advocates of inclusive governance, the Governor of Kano State, His Excellency Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has approved the renaming of the former Ministry of Women Affairs, Children and Disabled to the Ministry of Women Affairs, Children and People with Special Needs.
The approval was granted during a recent Executive Council Meeting held at the Government House, Kano.
This development was revealed to the Honourable Commissioner of the Ministry, Amb. Hajiya Amina Sani Abdullahi, shortly after the meeting.
According to the Commissioner, the change followed a formal request submitted by the Ministry to His Excellency, seeking the replacement of the term “Disabled” with the more respectful and inclusive term “People with Special Needs.”
She explained that the previous terminology was outdated and often viewed as limiting and stigmatizing.
This change reflects the dignity and humanity of individuals who have been too often marginalized by language,” the Commissioner said.
“Nobody is truly disabled everyone has abilities, talents, and contributions to offer society.
By adopting this new name, we are aligning with global best practices that promote respect, empowerment, and inclusion.”
She also commended Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for his consistent compassion and dedication to the welfare of people with special needs in the state.
“There has never been a time I met with His Excellency without him asking about persons with special needs what they need, how they are doing, and how the government can support them better.
His commitment is both genuine and inspiring,” she added.
The Commissioner noted that this symbolic but powerful change would serve as a foundation for broader reforms and more inclusive policies.
It is expected to influence public perception, reduce stigma, and empower individuals who fall under the category of people with special needs.
The renaming marks a significant step toward inclusion, dignity, and equity in Kano State’s governance structure and a reflection of the Governor’s people centered leadership.
