27th National Scientific conference and Annual general meeting has commenced in the state.
Declaring the two days event open the Kano State Governor Alhaji Abba K. Yusuf represented by The commissioner for health dr Abubakar labaran Yusuf said the event is historic as it is the first of its kind in the state.
He reflected on the COVID–19 pandemic which rendered Nigerians helpless due to test kits had to be imported into the country for stringent for diagnosis.
He however said that the narratives should be changed as It is high time the country claim ownership in manufacturing it own locally produced medical equipments.
Dr labaran said that this will make Nigerians to have a relief on the huge amount of money spent by ordinary citizens when diagnosed before been treated by a medical practitioner.
Representing, the Emir of kano khalifa Muhammad Sunusi lamido Sunusi 11, said that the event was timely in reminding policy makers to explore avenues in manufacturing of locally produced items, to desist from dependency in foreign products.
“if the population is smartly utilise as “we have the human resources in abundance and the funds, high number of unemployed youths can filled into these spaces”, he stressed.
On his part, the chairman local organizing committee, Dr Isah Suleiman Yahaya said that the scientific conference is an annual gathering and a call to action to all stakeholders in the scientific field to chart a way towards boycotting on dependence of foreign diagnostic equipments.
He said that ethical rules and regulations regarding to excessive operations of quacky laboratory centers should be checkmated.
President Guild of medical laboratory Directors, Dr Samuel.O. Fele stated that if home grown reagents are locally produced dependency will phase out by 70 percent making the country within the next five years to establish it’s own home grown diagnostic industries and meeting required international standards.
The theme for the event is from Import Dependency to Indigenous solutions: strengthening Nigeria’s Diagnostic sovereignty.
