ACEPHAP, EVERY PREGNANCY CONVENE KANO RELIGIOUS LEADERS TO END MATERIAL AND NEW BORN DEATH

Africa Centre for Excellence in population health and policy (ACEPHAP) in collaboration with Every pregnancy convene Kano state religious leaders on a faith base movement for mothers and babies in Nigeria.

In his Welcome remarks, the every pregnancy project co- coordinator Nigeria and Mali, Ibrahim Galla stated that the main objective of the event was to listen, learn and reflect together saving the lives of pregnant mothers in the country.

He said that religious leaders are key in breaking the barriers of silence as no pregnant mother is to die as a result of pregnancy.

While making her presentation Director ACEPHAP, Professor Hadiza Shehu Galadanci said that global statistics has shown that Nigeria contributes the highest indices of maternal death in the world.

Globally about five hundred thousand women die due to maternal death.

As Nigeria has now surpassed India, with thirty percent of maternal death.

Professor Galadanci added that in Kano state the statistics has shown a slight reduction from about 1,500 per 100,000 live birth to 900 maternal death as these data was derived from women who visits health facilities in the state.

The chief Executive offficer of Every pregnancy Isra chaker explain that it is a global charitable organisation meant to safe guard the lives of pregnant mothers and new born babies in Nigeria particularly Kano data has shown it has the highest burden of maternal death.

She noted that faith leaders especially Muslim clerics play a critical role in shaping community attitudes and behaviour, making them key partners in advocacy, awareness and resource mobilisation for maternal health.

The Every Pregnancy Project works across countries through faith-inspired and community-based organisations.

These include Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Egypt, Gaza, Iraq, Kenya, Lebanon, Malawi, Mali, Morocco, Nigeria, Pakistan, Palestine, Somalia, Sudan, Tanzania, Türkiye, the United States and Yemen.

The theme for the event is: critical role of the Nigerian Muslim community in reducing preventable maternal deaths.
