Technical Working Committee on Blood Transfusion Inaugurated

In a move to identify and address gaps and challenges in blood transfusion services in Kano state, the State Technical Working Committee on Blood Transfusion has been inaugurated.

In a press statement issued by the information officer of the ministry Ibrahim Abdullahi

He said Inaugurating the committee today, the state Commissioner for Health Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf said that the genesis of forming the committee is for the safety of blood transfusion in the state.

He stated that the selection of members of the committee was done base on competency, hoping that the task would be easy for the members because of the lots of expectations on the committee.

“Being part of such a historic committee is something that is going to be part of the history of Kano state.

I believe it will be a very good documentation of all the good activities that you are going to carry out. 

“Whoever comes to check history of blood transfusion in Kano state will find the names of all of you’, Dr. Labaran highlighted.

While congratulating them, the commissioner charged them to work tirelessly and assiduously in order to provide an excellent service delivery to the teeming populace of Kano state.

He lauded Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for giving all the needed attention to the care of the people of the state, noting with satisfaction that the achievements recorded within the shortest period of time are superb and heartwarming.

Speaking, the Chairman of the Committee and also the Director Medical Services of the Hospitals Management Board, Dr. Musbahu Rabi’u thanked Dr. Labaran for seeing them worthy for such an important responsibility, assuring that they would do their best to do justice to the task entrusted them with.

The terms of reference of the committee, is among other things, to provide technical expertise and advice on blood transfusion related matters; develop, domesticate as well as implement guidelines, policies and standards as needed and to develop and implement quality improvement initiative.

Others is to collaborate with stakeholders including healthcare providers, health facilities, private blood banks, partners and regulatory bodies on issues related to blood transfusion services; to provide training and capacity building support for healthcare workers and blood bank staff, etc.

Members of the committee include Directors Medical Laboratory Services, Nursing Services as well as Admin and General Services of the Hospitals Management Board.

It also comprises representatives of the Private Health Institutions Management Agency, Primary Healthcare Management Board, Drugs and Medical Consumables Supply Agency and Guild of Medical Directors.

The rest are representatives from Academia (BUK/AKTH) and Partners and a renowned Microbiologist while Dr. Hauwa Ibrahim (Consultant Heamatologist) will serve as the secretary of the committee.

The committee has the liberty to co-opt any stakeholder as the need arises.
