The 30-man technical committee constituted by the Hon. Commissioner, Ministry of Transportation, Kano State, Engr. Muhammad Ibrahim Diggol, to review and develop a comprehensive transport policy green paper has submitted its report.

In a press statement issued by the public relations officer of the ministry Ibrahim Adamu K/Nassarawa.

Presenting the report to the state commissioner, the chairman of the technical committee, Professor J.A. Falola from Yusuf Maitama Sule University, revealed the committee has come up with an all-encompassing transport policy that, if developed into a full transport policy, would usher a new dawn in the state transportation sector.

Professor Falola acknowledges the maximum support given to the committee in discharging the assignment effectively.

The chairman called on the Kano state government to expedite action towards the development of the Transport Policy Green Paper into a full transport policy in the state.

The terms of reference of the committee include:Conduct a general review of the transport policy options in the draft transport policy document.

Develop the best possible options to actualize the state’s vision on transport, which is to “provide good accessibility to socio-economic activities for all residents of the state within acceptable environmental standards.”

identify missing gaps in the Draft Transport Policy Document and to reflect current realities

Develop a full transport policy green paper for the state.

He therefore acknowledged the foresight of the Kano state government under the leadership of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for taking appropriate measures that will revitalize the transport sector, which he described as the first of its kind in the state.

The Co-chairman of the Committee, Professor Adamu Idris Tanko, Vice Chancellor of Baba Ahmed University, registered his appreciation on behalf of the committee for finding them worthy candidates for the assignment, which he describes as an important component for the facilitation of the economic prosperity of the state.

Receiving the report, the state Commissioner of Transportation, Engineer Muhammad Ibrahim Diggol, said the Kano state government has decided to constitute a thirty-member technical committee to develop a transport green paper for the state.

The transport policy document was developed by development partners and has not been attended to by past administrations, which he believes, without such a framework, makes it difficult to anchor policy development in the state’s transportation sector effectively.

He is optimistic about the readiness of the state to facilitate the development of a full transport policy, as Kano is an emerging megacity, and the need to provide reliable transportation is timely and imperative, which is in line with the present administration’s determination of repositioning the state transport sector for maximum productivity.

In the same vein, Engineer Diggol commended members of the committee for working tirelessly to submit the report within a stipulated time.

The commissioner assured that the Transport Policy Green Paper would receive maximum attention by the state; as  it is submitted to the State Executive Council for consideration.

Engineer Muhammad Ibrahim Diggol, who spoke on the significance of the transport policy, said the policy will create an enabling environment for private sector participation in the transportation economy and boost the economic prosperity for which the state was known for over the years as the commercial center of Northern Nigeria.
