Journalism in Nigeria has a rich History, with many seasoned professionals having dedicated their lives to the pursuit of truth, accuracy, and fairness. However, the industry has also faced numerous challenges, including limited resources, inadequate training, and the rise of misinformation to mention but a few.
On August 13th, 2025 the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) held an engagement with veteran journalists based in Kano as part of activities lined up for a two-day National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the Union in Kano between 13th-15th August.
The engagement that took place at the NUJ press center brought together seasoned journalists who have made significant profession in Kano, the country and beyond.
The Union’s national President, Comrade Alhassan Yahaya said at the event that the meeting was aimed at providing platform to share experiences, provide a medium for the veterans to acquaint the younger generations with rudiments of journalism and the need to adjust to modern techniques.
Some of the resolutions at the meeting included the need to initiate periodic engagement and setting up of a League of the Veteran Journalists in the State for the improvement of journalism practice in the State.
To walk the talk, nine days after the engagement, on 22nd of August to be precise, the Commissioner of Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya inaugurated a 9-man member committee under the leadership of Alhaji Ahmed Aminu, a Titan of journalism cum administrator saddled with the responsibility of forming a League of Veteran Journalist in the State.
Membership of the committee was drawn from a handsome pool of veterans, technocrats, academics, State NUJ leadership, and sprinkle of current practitioners in the journalism profession.
After seven weeks of exhaustive deliberations, consultations and stakeholder engagements, the committee on Monday 6th October, 2025, submitted a Charter to the Commissioner of Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya that will guide the formation of the league.
At the submission of the charter, Alhaji Ahmed Aminu boldly stated the committee has produced a comprehensive document of functional guiding principles for journalism practice in the state and beyond.
He expressed optimism and conviction that when the League becomes operational it will serve as a credible advisory body to government and the media, promoting professionalism, safeguarding ethical standards, and building public confidence in information management.
The Charter outlines key objectives including mentoring and uplifting present and upcoming generation of journalists in the state; promoting, preserve and safeguarding the ethics and integrity of the profession, and to enhance citizens’ trust in public communication.
The Charter has been designed to enable the League when it starts operating to:
Uphold and promote responsible, ethical and transparent media engagement between government and citizens as would ensure accountability, development and peace.
Serve as advisory body for good governance and building confidence in information dissemination and management.
It is also envisioned that the League, whose membership is voluntary, shall serve as an avenue for accomplished professionals to give back to society.
As outlined in the Charter, the key functions of the league are designed to be all encompassing, including but not limited to:
Serve as guardians of journalistic integrity and adherence to professional conduct in the state.
Build bridges between government, media practitioners and the public for trust and mutual understanding
Support media regulators and proprietors through regular consultations to ensure strict compliance with extant laws guiding the establishment, content generation, personnel recruitment and promotion.
Lend helping hand in capacity building and training of journalists and media managers.
Mediate in disputes or misunderstandings between government, corporate bodies, organizations, individuals, and the media.
Periodically monitor and report on media practice and public communication.
One can undoubtedly say that the formation of a League of Veteran Journalists is a highly and timely impressive initiative and welcome development for several reasons:
Preservation of Journalism History: Veteran journalists possess invaluable experience and knowledge gained over the years. By forming a League, their stories, insights, and contributions to journalism can be documented and preserved for future generations.
Mentorship opportunities: The League can create a structured mentorship programme where Veteran journalists can guide and support younger ones as it will lead to the transfer of skills, ethics and best practices ensuring the continuity of quality journalism.
Advocacy and support: A collective body of Veteran journalists can advocate for the rights and welfare of journalists, particularly those who are retired or facing challenges. It can also provide a support system for members professional or personal difficulties.
Promotion of Ethical Journalism: Veteran journalists can play a crucial role in promoting ethical journalism practices. The League can organize workshops, Seminars, and discussions to uphold and advanced professional standards in journalism.
Networking and Collaboration: The League can serve as a platform for Veterans to network, collaborate on projects, and contribute to the media landscape. This can lead to innovative projects and initiatives that benefit the journalism community and society at large.
Contribution to policy Making: with their wealth of experience, members of the League can provide valuable insights and recommendations to policymakers on issues affecting the media industry, contributing to more informed and effective policies.
Enhance Credibility: The formation of such a League can enhance the credibility of Veteran journalists, showcasing their commitment to excellence in journalism. It can also serve as a mark of distinction and expertise in the field.
Community Engagement: The League can engage in community service, such as media literacy programmes, public lectures, and other initiatives that benefit society and promote better understanding of the role of journalism.
In conclusion, the formation of a League of Veteran journalists in Kano is impressive because it leverages the experience and expertise of seasoned professionals to benefit the journalism community, promote ethical practices, and contribute positively to society.
