The Federal Government has called for collaboration with private sector stakeholders and development partners to establish soil testing laboratories across the country’s 774 Local Government Areas (LGAs).
The Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Mr. Aliyu Sabi made the call during a sensitization and advocacy campaign in Kano.

He said the initiative is part of the Nigeria Farmers’ Soil Health Card Scheme, aiming to promote sustainable agricultural practices, improve crop yields, and enhance soil quality monitoring.
He emphasized the importance of testing soil to achieve sustainable agricultural goals and urged private investors to partner with relevant agencies to set up modern laboratories.
The Minister noted that the Federal Government plans to establish soil testing laboratories in all LGAs, providing farmers with accurate data on soil health.
“This initiative aligns with the government’s broader agricultural development agenda, seeking to empower farmers with tools and knowledge for increased productivity and sustainable growth.”
“Soil testing laboratories will play a crucial role in analyzing soil properties, such as nutrient content, pH levels, and contamination.”

This will help prevent soil erosion, promote sustainable farming practices, and improve crop yields. The government’s effort to establish soil testing laboratories is a step towards achieving sustainable agricultural development and ensuring food security in the country.
Notably, the Federal Government has also taken steps to ensure the financial autonomy of LGAs, with the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation establishing a dedicated unit to oversee direct disbursement of funds to the 774 LGAs.
