KNSG Marks World Toilet Day, Create Awareness to Doorsteps Across 44 LGAs

The Kano Ministry for Local Government has joined the global community in commemorating World Toilet Day, aimed at creating awareness on the importance of proper toilet usage, sanitation, and hygiene.

This significant event was celebrated across all 44 Local Government Areas of the state, showcasing the government’s commitment to promoting public health and environmental protection.

The celebration was organised through the Water Environment, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WESH) department, which played a crucial role in educating communities on the significance of proper sanitation and hygiene practices.

The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Mohammed Tajo Othman, represented by the Director of WESH, Alhaji Dauda Garba Falgore, highlighted the importance of this year’s theme, “Sanitation in a Changing World, We Will Always Need Toilets.”

The Director emphasised the need for collective action to ensure universal access to clean and sanitised toilets, which is essential for guarding against various diseases.

 

He noted that this can be achieved through a collaborative effort between the government, communities and individuals.

He said Kano State has made significant progress in improving sanitation, with 36 out of 44 LGAs declared free from open defecation, the government has implemented various initiatives to improve access to clean water, sanitation facilities, and hygiene education, which have contributed to this success.

The Commissioner reaffirmed Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s commitment to improving sanitation and hygiene in the state, promoting public health, environmental protection, and economic development.

Speaking on behalf of 44 Council Chairmen, the Chairman of Kabo Local Government, Alhaji Lawan Najume Kabo, has commended the Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, for his support and contribution to the success of the local government in various areas, including sanitation and hygiene.

He expressed his gratitude to the Governor for providing the necessary resources and guidance that have enabled the local government to make significant progress.

“As Chairman, I am proud to say that we have made significant strides in promoting WASH initiatives in our local government.

We have constructed and rehabilitated several boreholes, public toilets, and sanitation facilities, and have also conducted hygiene awareness campaigns in various communities. Our efforts are yielding positive results.”

The World Toilet Day celebration in the 44 LGAs was marked with various activities, including walk and awareness campaigns at public places, such as markets, motor parks, Schools and densely populated areas.

These activities aimed to educate communities on the importance of proper sanitation and hygiene practices and promote behaviour change.
