KANO EDU COMM REVEALS ABSENCE OF VALID DATA OF OUT OF SCHOOL CHILDREN IN THE STATE

Kano State Commissioner of Education Dr Ali Haruna Makoda has announced that for the past years, there is no valid data as regards to out- of- school children in the state.

He noted though ” According to the UNESCO report, Nigeria is having 10% of the total number of out – of – school children globally which is about 10.2 million but Kano is taking 7.6% having 989,000 out – of – school children “.

He however assure that the government is currently working out modernities to generate authentic data and how to address the problem, hence the formation of the committee.

According to a statement signed by the Director Public Enlightenment Ministry of Education, Kano State, Balarabe Abdullahi Kiru , said Dr.Makoda  made this known during the committee biannual meeting on Sunday,

The meeting serves as an avenue for cross fertilization of ideas, a place where new issues are raised and positive resolutions reached for effective education policies delivery.

This was in a continued effort to address education challenges, Kano State Education Sector Joint Steering Committee has conducted a two-day biannual meeting at Kaduna, assessing the status and progress of the education sector in the state.

It could be recalled that early in 2024, Kano State Government under the leadership of Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf inaugurated Education Sector Joint Steering Committee comprising members from Government Agencies, Key Stakeholders and Development Partners to harmonize support given to the state education sector.

On the 22nd February, 2025,  the committee held its meeting at Kaduna to align the state education priorities with the education strategic objectives to achieve better results.

Dr. Makoda explained that the committee has during the meeting, reviewed what have so far been achieved within the last six months under the education sector.

He maintained that the committee also agreed on the new strategic steps to adopt while improving effective education service delivery.education.

He further said during the meeting, the committee specifically discussed on the problem of out – of – school children in the state, revealing that the government has already formed Kano State out – of – school children education initiative committee expected to be inaugurated tomorrow.

Earlier the Technical Adviser to Governor on Educational Reforms Haladu Muhammad disclosed that during the meeting, participants were expected to present key insights on the Kano mutual accountability framework, curriculum reform and SDG roadmap from the year 2025-2030.

In their separate remarks,.the chairman house committee on SUBEB Usman Abubakar Tasiu Kiru, chairman house committee on education Suleiman Mukhtar Madobi assured the Assembly’s full support towards the development of education sector in the State.

His Highness, the Emir of Kano Malam Muhammad Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II represented by Dokajin Kano, District head of Garko Alhaji Muhd Aliyu assured total support of the Emirate in achieving quality education sector, stressing the need to prioritize vocational education to make youth in the state self reliance.

Presenting goodwill messages on behalf of their organizations, the representative of PLANE FCDO, UNICEF, Plan international, Bridge Connect Africa, Com Ed Connect AGile, IDEAS, Save the Children, K-SAFE, SBMC and NUT also highlighted some of the educational interventions so far carried out in the state.

The development partners however presented progress report covering their various intervention programs on the education sector in Kano.
