Professional health unions in Kano state call on the state Government to transform temporary health workers to permanent and pensionable staffs.
This was made known during an interactive dialogue organised by boost project in the state.
Delivery his welcome remarks, the project team lead of the better opportunities for optimal services and targeted immunization for zero dose and under immunized children (boost ) project Nigeria, Mallam Abdullahi Magama said that the aim of the event was on how to find an impactful solutions in changing the negative attitude of health workers towards service providers as it will go a long way to improve routine immunization uptake towards addressing zero dose and under immunized children in the state.
Magama said that a research conducted shows one major cause for some women not to access the health facilities was due to the negative attitude of health workers.
The team lead boost project stressed, on the main reasons the health unions were call upon not only on routine immunization but as well as to address other health related issues to seek solutions and have a commitment from the unions leaders.
He said that each union will have a document to sign, as each year the meeting will hold to engage with the health workers union.
On his part, the advocacy officer Save the children international (sci), boost project Umar Ibrahim said that the engagement meeting with the professional health union leaders, is also as a part to celebrate the world polio day, which is yearly commemorated by the world Health organisation.
A union leader, Association of community health practitioners of Nigeria Kano state branch, comrade jamila sidi decried on the decade long awaited period of conversion of volunteer staff to permanent workers, poor incentives, work overload are all contributory factors hampering effective and efficient routine immunization coverage in the state.
On his part the state primary health care personnel shamsudeen Muhammad, led an open discussion with stakeholders on the cause of negative attitudes of health workers particularly on routine immunization as lengthy discussion was made in finding a sustainable solutions to the issues of routine immunization.
The meeting was attended by various organisations which include faith base organizations, fomwan, civil society organisations Government officials and media.
