The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has urged governments at all levels to employ competent and qualified teachers in schools to improve the quality of education.
Mr. Rahama Rihood Mohammed Farah, Chief of UNICEF’s Field Office in Kano, made this call at a press briefing to commemorate International Education Day in Kano.
The day serves as an advocacy moment for education, providing an annual platform for a global call to action that emphasizes education’s role in fostering a well-informed, inclusive, and peaceful society.
Mr. Rahama Rihood expressed concern over the number of out-of-school children (OOSC) and the challenge of those enrolled in school not receiving quality education.

He lamented the negative impact of climate change, particularly the recent flooding in Jigawa State that destroyed over 115 school buildings and facilities, disrupting learning activities in affected areas.
Mr. Rahama commended Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for allocating a significant portion of the 2025 budget to education and declaring a state of emergency on education.
He called on other states to emulate this step to revive education across the northwest.
UNICEF urged all stakeholders to work together to ensure every child has access to quality education.
