The Kano State Centre for Disease Control, KNCDC has released a public advisory urging residents to take precautions against Hantavirus, a serious illness spread through contact with rodents.
In an infographic shared with the public, health authorities explained that Hantavirus is transmitted mainly through exposure to rodent urine, droppings, or saliva. If not treated early, the virus can lead to severe breathing problems.
Listed are key symptoms to watch for, including high fever and chills, severe fatigue and muscle aches, dizziness, headache, shortness of breath, and nausea or abdominal pain.

The public is advised to seek immediate medical attention if these symptoms appear after possible rodent exposure.
To curb the spread, the KNCDC outlined six preventive measures: keeping homes clean and rodent-free, storing food in sealed containers, disinfecting areas with rodent droppings before cleaning, using gloves and masks during cleanup, reporting unusual rodent activity to health authorities, and seeking early medical care if exposed.
The advisory also emphasized basic hygiene practices such as washing hands, wearing masks, and maintaining distance as part of community protection efforts.

Health officials stressed that public awareness and prompt action are critical to protecting families and communities from the virus.
