The National Agency For Foods, Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) warn fruits sellers at Naibawa Yanlemo to avoid use of Calcium Carbite chemicals for preservation of their products. 

The Deputy Director of the agency in Kano Alh. Danladi Baba stated this at a public awareness campaign against use of dangerous chemicals in foodstuffs organised by National Orientation Agency Kano held at the market. 

Alh. Danladi Baba who pointed out the dangers behind use of the chemicals to human, he said it was produced for uses of welding services but not for food preservation. 

He said the chemical causes cancer and damages major human organs assuring to fish out and prosecute traders who engaged in using it for preservation of food items. 

On his part the representative of Standards Organization of Nigeria Mr. Oliver Panyi Abraham said they are ready to ensure that the chemicals are use for initial purposes. 

Speaking, the secretary of Nigerian Fruits Sellers Association Kano State branch Alh. Adam Mohd pledged to collaborate with NAFDAC and SON to fight the menace in the market. 

The Kumbotso local government health educator Malam Nasir charged fruits trader for hygienic products and regular sanitation of their environment as well as avoid open defecation near the market. 

Earlier, Director of National Orientation Agency, Kano Alh. Rabi’u Ado said the campaign was organised to protect human lives and sanitised fruits business.
