Kano Tricycle Unions Commit to Driving Routine Immunization as BOOST Project Mobilizes Over 130 Male

In a major push to eliminate “zero-dose” cases in Kano State, over 130 male of the Kano State Tricycle Associations Forum have pledged their support for routine immunization.

This commitment follows a high-level sensitization session organized by the BOOST Project (Better Opportunities for Optimal Services and Targeted Immunization for Zero-Dose and Under-Immunized Children).

The engagement, held at the Kano State Library, targeted members of Kungiyoyin Yan Adaidaita Sahu one of Kano’s most influential male-dominated associations.

With an estimated 200,000 operators across the state, the union represents a powerful network of daily community influencers.

The initiative aims to turn tricycle operators into frontline advocates who will promote vaccine benefits during daily passenger interactions to encourage male household heads to overcome resistance to immunization.

Representatives from the BOOST Project emphasized that transport workers are uniquely positioned to bridge the gap between health services and hard-to-reach communities.

Participants were briefed on immunization schedules and the ongoing development of a Kano State-Specific Immunization Policy, which seeks to integrate community voices into sustainable health governance.

“Leveraging trusted community platforms is essential to ensuring life-saving vaccines reach every child,” project organizers noted, highlighting the high burden of zero-dose cases in the region.

The session concluded with the formal signing of a commitment statement by union leadership in Making immunization updates a regular feature of union meetings.

Involving Male engagement towards directly addressing social barriers that prevent fathers from approving vaccinations and to ensure Partnering with the Community of Practice to track progress and improve local health outcomes.

This collaboration marks a significant milestone in community-led health action, using the mobility and influence of the transport sector to ensure no child in Kano is left behind.

The BOOST Project is implemented by Save the Children International with funding from GSK.

In collaboration with the Kano State Community of Practice on Immunization, Budget Tracking, Advocacy, and Accountability, the project works to strengthen routine immunization coverage and accountability across Nigeria.
