In a decisive move to review the state’s development narratives, the Kano State Ministry of Planning and Budget, in collaboration with the UNICEF Kano Field Office, has convened a two-day Q1 2026 Food and Nutrition review and coordination meeting in Kaduna State.
The high-level stakeholders’ gathering aims to evaluate current strategies, strengthen partnerships, and map out actionable solutions to improve nutrition and child welfare indicators in Kano.
Declaring the event open, the Acting Permanent Secretary and Chairman of the State Committee on Food and Nutrition (SCFN), Abdulmumin Ladan Ajumawa, highlighted the critical importance of the review.

He emphasized that improving nutritional value is a top priority for the ministry and requires sustained momentum.
Speaking at the meeting, the Chief of the UNICEF Field Office in Kano, Dr. Karanveer Singh, delivered a sobering reminder of the stakes involved.
He expressed deep concern over the high rate of child stunting in Kano State, pointing out that more than half of the child population is currently affected.
“We do not want Kano State to be called out for poor indicators,” Dr. Singh stated. “We have two options either to continue with business as usual or take deliberate steps toward meaningful change.”
Dr. Singh urged government agencies and development partners to leverage their collective strengths rather than working in isolation.
He emphasized that all future interventions must be evidence-based and guided by reliable data rather than personal opinions.
